Endangered Species

An endangered species is any plant or animal that may soon die out or become extinct. Every year, thousands of species become endangered all over the world because of loss of habitat, overhunting and competition with other plants and animals for food. In the United States alone, animals like the red wolf, California condor and American crocodile have lost their homes and are in danger of extinction. Check out these sites to find out more about why species become endangered and how you can help protect them.

  • Keep the Wild Alive!
In this special section devoted to endangered species and habitats, the NWF offers information about specific species and offers links to other sites with information about endangered species.

  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Read feature articles about some of the lesser known species that are endangered, and find out what this organization is doing in your area to help endangered species.

  • Bagheera: In the Wild
Designed for students in grades 9 through 12, this site provides an up-to-date list of vanishing and extinct species, spotlight features and case studies on a variety of these species, and video clips of endangered animals.

  • Defenders of Wildlife: Kid's Planet
Navigate your way through the web of life or play wild games to learn more about endangered species. The Wild Animals Facts Sheet breaks the endangered species list down into continents.
