National Merit Scholar
Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholar program is for high school students with exceptionally high PSAT scores. Those with the highest combined scores, or the Selection Index score, qualify for acknowledgement. Two-thirds of about 50,000 students are named Commended Students and one-third (the highest scoring students in the state) are Semifinalists. A percentage of Semifinalists move on to the Finalist round, and approximately 8,200 winners receive Merit Scholarships. Read more about the National Merit Corporation and the various Merit Scholarships here, or see what you need to do to enter. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is also sponsored by the corporation, and is specifically for African Americans vying for scholarships. For more recent news, look to the press releases.
